Each limerick should be about a well known person but without mentioning them by name. Your limerick would also have to be absolutely “clean” and non-offensive in any other way!
Limericks have an established form comprising of one stanza of five lines. The first, second and fifth lines should rhyme; and third and fourth lines (usually shorter in length) will have a different rhyme. (AABBA). The use of syllables is crucial to the rhythm of the limerick.
There are plenty of good examples of limericks online. Edward Lear is fondly remembered for championing the limerick form via his Book of Nonsense (1846); and of course, Spike Milligan was very skilled at humorously getting them right and wrong! Wikipedia also has a guide.
Go on - have a go! It's super fun!
Entries to the limerick competition need to be Emailed to Helen and Ian by 7pm on Monday 24 August. No extensions, sorry.
Judging will then be open until Noon on Friday 28 August. Results will be released on the evening of Monday 31 August.
