For our first meeting in the Quakers Hall for 2024, we welcomed speaker, Janet McNulty.
Janet spoke about the life of Robert Burns and reading some of his poems in dialect; and brougth together a number of connections.
Janet is a direct descendant of Robert Burns – he was her grandmother's grandfather's grandfather. Although born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, Janet spent most of her first three years in Innellan, on the Clyde, with her mother and grandmother, whilst her father worked abroad. Her professional career was as a languages teacher for 15 years, an education adviser / inspector, in Harrow and Chief Education Adviser in Windsor and Maidenhead. In 2002 she was promoted to a wider whole-council post and retired in 2008 as Assistant Chief Executive. Janet now works in a voluntary capacity, mainly for the local museum in Bushey, Hertfordshire, where she lives with her husband Peter. She has also twice been President of the Harrow and District Caledonian Society.
It was a fascinating and enjoyable evening; and our thanks to Andrea Neidle for arranging.
