WRITING PROMPTS 2026

Writing prompts are a popular activity at Watford Writers and result in some excellent writing. Some pieces go on to become much larger, expanded, pieces of work. Others lend themselves to new ideas.

Themes are decided by the group and all genres of writing are encouraged. The work is then read to the group at our meetings and receive constructive critiquing. A very enjoyable time is had by all.

Below is a selection of Writing Prompts from January 2026 to present.

MY FUNNY VALENTINE - FEB 2026

Our 9 February meeting was chaired by Sumi who set a rather interesting writing prompt entitled My Funny Valentine.

The stipulation was that your writing had to be funny (comical).

Beware: There may be one or two "risque" pieces.

Below is a selection of what was read out on the night.

RANDOM SENTENCE - FEB 2026

Our February meeting in the Quakers Hall  was all about using a random sentence from a favourite book, poem, or non-fiction

and using this to inspire a piece of new writing.  A great evening yielded wonderful results.
